Spectacular Works of Land Art Celebrate the Beauty of Nature

Since 1972, Bavarian artist Nils-Udo has worked directly with nature to create stunning, site-specific works of art that celebrate the beauty of the land. Found berries, leaves, branches, and blossoms are transformed into captivating pieces evocative of mysterious portals and dreamy fairy realms deep in the woods. From a delicately arranged scattering of petals on the surface of a pond, to spectacular nests formed of twigs, leaves, and wildflowers, each ephemeral intervention is a reflection of nature in its most essential state.

“A basic idea is to achieve absolute purity. Nature performs a demonstration of itself. Every non-natural element is ruled out as impure. No other materials are used than those found in each natural space. The characteristics, the respective possibilities for processing, and the character of the natural space itself plays the major role in determining the shape of the work,” Nils-Udo says in his artist statement. “By installing plantings or by integrating them into more complex installations, the work is literally implanted into nature. As a part of nature, the work lives and passes away in the rhythm of the seasons.”
