For the all-night event, Nuit Blanche in Paris, Motoi Yamamoto created another amazing labyrinth of salt. This time, the enormous piece, measuring 7×12 meters (23×40 feet), was made at Hotel de Ville de Paris. It took the artist 40 hours or three days to complete the piece. As spectators lined the walls, Motoi meticulously made the labyrinth out of 100 kg of salt.
As Motoi once told us about the process, “During the course of my drawing, I cannot tell it if will reach the essential point till its very end because lines are curved or cut against my intention. It depends not only on my psychological or physical condition, but also on the condition of the floor or the level of humidity. I always silently follow the trace, that is controlled as well as uncontrolled from the start point after I have completed it.”
Nuit Blanche is an annual all-night arts festival where museums, private and public art galleries as well as cultural institutions are open and free of charge. The city itself turns into one big art gallery as art installations and performances happen right on the street.
