Modern Architecture – Jeju Provincial Art Museum (8 pics)

The natural beauty of Jeju Island in South Korea serves as a backdrop for this museum designed by Seoul-based architects Gansam Partners. Situated within the Halla Mountains, the recently completed Jeju Provincial Art Museum accentuates the surrounding natural environment through material selection and carefully designed views of the exterior. Made of local Jeju stone and concrete, the museum blurs the boundary between man-made and natural. A pool at the entrance of the building reflects daylight into the building, while the rear walkway of the museum is inspired by the volcanic Halla mountains. The colonnade on the north and west faade frames the sky, and the cultural plaza serves as a year round outdoor exhibition and performance space. Jeju Provincial Art Museum’s primary functions include research, conservation, exhibition, and education.
