This past weekend, Zaha Hadid celebrated the completion of Guangzhou Opera House, the architect’s first completed project in China. Shaped to resemble two pebbles on the bank of the Pearl River, the design was influenced by river valleys and the way they are transformed by erosion.
With a 1,800-seat Grand Theater equipped with the very latest acoustic technology, a 400-seat multi-functional hall, and a voluminous entrance lobby and lounge, Guangzhou Opera House is the largest performance center in South China and the third biggest theater in the entire nation. It is estimated to have cost one billion Yuan ($152 million).
