Modern Architecture: Vegetation-Covered Headquarters

Italian architecture firm StudioDosi proposed this double-skinned, vegetation-covered headquarters for the Province of Parma. Located in Italy, the four-story 145,000 sq foot (13,500 sq meter) structure features a wide array of green building strategies, extensive gardens, and a living exoskeleton meant to provide shade and natural ventilation for the building underneath.

The double-skinned exterior has a wide gap in between which allows natural light to enter through the windows. Waste water is collected and the structure utilizes both thermal solar and photovoltaics to help create energy for the building. A geothermal plant maximizes energy efficiency and results in a zero-carbon footprint.

The estimated cost of the proposal is expected to be less than $13.4 million. Out of 77 submissions, StudioDosi placed second.
