We first discovered Helene Meldahl back in 2014, when her doodle-embellished selfies were just beginning to attract attention–and with good reason. This Norwegian artist, who goes by the Instagram handle @mirrorsme, creates fanciful personal portraits using nothing more than her iPhone, a mirror, and some chalk or acrylic markers, placing herself in clever costumes and scenes that range from the ordinary to the extraordinary. Whether she’s transported herself to the clouds or the streets of New York, every selfie tells a story rich with color, whimsy, and playful expression.
After several years, Meldahl’s imagination still shows no signs of stopping. She recently transformed herself into Superwoman for International Woman’s Day, slipped into mittens and skis for a fictional trip to the mountains, and whipped up a whirling mint-and-oreo milkshake. Her Instagram account now has over 159k followers, and she even launched her own limited edition clothing collection with Moods of Norway this past winter (which is currently sold out). The line is based on her illustrations and includes scarves, make-up bags, and pajama sets, which makes perfect sense–perhaps wearing her doodles to bed might bring dreams as enchanting as her art.
Though Meldahl’s work is delightfully lighthearted, there just might be a deeper lesson in the painted mirror shots: with a blend of basic materials, modern technology, and carefree creativity, we all have the means for metamorphosis in many more ways than we may realize, if only for an Instagrammable moment.
