We’ve come across a herd of book sculptors lately and, yet again, we’re blown away by another artist’s skilled works. Considering the amount of carved works we’ve spotted, artist Kyle Kirkpatrick’s literary landscapes still manage to intrigue us.
The young UK-based sculptor is old enough to know of a time before e-readers and recognizes the age-old medium’s ability to effectively be customized. As such, he digs into books, modifying the structure of their pages and adding tiny figurines to resemble a model view of a topographically textured environment filled with people. The layering in Kirkpatrick’s work is remarkable and the text on the pages add an interesting visual to the swirling cuts.
With the rise of all of these art pieces being constructed out of the carcasses of a dying medium, it makes me think about what the future will bring. How far away are we from carving into iPads?
