The annual Met Gala is a time when it’s encouraged for attendees to push the boundaries of fashion. With themes left open to interpretation, there are a lot of opportunities to have some fun with what they’ll wear. And at the 2022 Met Gala, many folks did just that. But as Vogue noted with the night’s theme “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” the concept conjures the 19th century Gilded Age of America. For men, this could be as simple as wearing a tuxedo with a white tie.
Many male attendees went the classic suit route and looked dapper donning a satin tie. But there were plenty of guys who took a sartorial risk and wore something other than a black tuxedo. One of the most striking looks of the night came from the Swedish style star Fredrik Robertsson. He wore a custom design by Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen. Inspired by architecture, recycled mylar was used to create a delicate feather-like shape that radiated from his shoulders and legs. The individual quills were handsewn onto the pants and the sheer tulle top.
“Since neither of us is American,” Robertsson explains about his outfit, “we discussed how liberty is in America’s founding ethos and identity, and Iris embraced this liberty to design freely, instead of sketching within the constraints of this theme.”

While many men at the Met Gala 2022 wore a tuxedo, there were others who took some risks with their fashion choices and made a big impact on the red carpet.
