People Are Upset This Woman Lost Her “Ugly Christmas Sweater” Office Contest

Maryland-based financial operations analyst Maya Moore may not have placed first in her office’s ugly Christmas sweater contest, but her tinsel-covered tale has gotten Twitter into the holiday spirit.

Like many workplaces, Moore’s firm organizes fun events and festive functions throughout the holiday season. This year, the office opted to host an ugly Christmas sweater contest. With her eyes on the prize, Moore spent four hours designing and decorating her over-the-top entry: a garland-wrapped sweater complete with eclectic ornaments, a functioning string of lights, and an adorable matching hat. While she was certain she’d win first prize, she actually came in a second place—a grievance she hilariously addressed in a now-viral tweet.

While her silly post has only been up for a couple of days, it has garnered over 25,000 re-tweets and 67,000 likes—and Moore is both flattered and perplexed. “I don’t know how or why this went viral, as you can see I don’t have many followers,” she told Mashable. “I posted it originally for my sisters and friends to get a kick out of.” As for her post-contest holiday blues, Moore insists she isn’t actually upset. “I’m not mad at all that I didn’t win first,” she wrote. “I had fun making it and getting a rise out of my coworkers the entire day.”
