This irregular Drift Bench is a part of Fernando Mastrangelo‘s sculptural furniture collection. Commissioned by the James Gallery in Paris, the piece strikes a unique balance between the functional and the formally artistic. Mastrangelo transforms sand and cement into a sculptural furniture item, creating an eye-catching centrepiece that challenges the boundaries of traditional furniture design.
The Brooklyn-based artist aims to push the ideas surrounding commonplace materials in order to “cast sculptural objects that inextricably entangle fine art and design disciplines.” His pieces are inherently minimalistic, while maintaining a rugged approach that adds layers of sophistication to the final products. Drift Bench establishes itself in contemporary furniture design for its perfect balance of dualities, juxtaposing order and chaos within a single piece.
If you are interested in exploring more of Mastrangelo’s work, James Gallery will be sharing some of his collection from January 28-31, 2016 at artgenve, a contemporary art exhibition that celebrates modern art and design.
