Going on now at Pace Gallery in New York is an art installation of epic proportions. Brooklyn, New York-based Tara Donovan has created a beautiful 11-foot-tall sculpture that looks like it could be from another planet. What she’s actually done is fold an incredible amount of thin polyester film or mylar into beautiful balls. Mylar is one of those materials that’s used in packaging, recording tapes, and photography. Most commonly, we see it in those slightly expensive balloons at the supermarket.
For those unfamiliar with Donovan, she’s one of those artists who can transform everyday objects like plastic straws, paper plates, scotch tape, toothpicks and plastic cups into extraordinary works of art.
