Italy-based photographer Mark Abouzeid recreates classic Renaissance paintings with real people for his photo series titled The New New World. His updated rendition of these portraits focus on composition, costuming, and props rather than finding the original subjects’ doppelgnger. In fact, the photographer takes the liberty of changing the person’s race in a few instances.
The series presents a contemporary look for the classic works of art. While painting was the main mode of capturing one’s image during the Renaissance, our modern era is far more accustomed to taking photographs. Abouzeid’s collection of works reflect the new way of life and modern society’s adopted medium, while maintaining the dated attire and artistic configuration of the past. The photographer welcomes viewers to the new New World.
