Guardians of Time Appear in Venice

Mystery surrounds anything that is veiled and Austrian artist Manfred Kielnhofer’s Guardians of Time sculptures (aka Time Guardians or Timeguards) are no exception. The figures, which have toured around the world, have recently popped up all over Venice for La Biennale, adding a bit of intrigue to each space they’ve inhabited. Whether they were placed on firm, concrete ground or atop a gondola, going for a ride with weary passengers, the sculptures altered their environment.

Kielnhofer began his haunting contemporary series back in 2006 and has continued to expand on his work and share the curious figures with the world. They add a hint of mystery to their surroundings, which is only heightened when taking a closer look at the sculptures. What appear to be a series of figures draped in red sheets are actually just the crimson cloaks themselves, lit from within, taking on the figure of an invisible person. Kielnhofer brilliantly captures the essence of gothic culture rich with mythological narratives.
