Based in LA, Malanie Rothschild is a self-taught artist who once spilled a gallon of paint all over the floor. She decided to let the paint dry and, as she peeled the dried pieces up days later, she discovered a magnificent new creation that instantly inspired her as an artist. She discovered that this simple mistake of spilling paint was, in and of itself, a painting without the canvas. The creation existed solely as paint and the air around it that transformed it from solid to liquid. And thus, a project was born.
Many of her works feature colorful spills of acrylic splattered across tabletops, dripping over the edge of canvas, and, in this Paint and Air series, suspended from metal armature. The Paint & Air series involves vibrant colors that fall towards the ground in unpredictable, varying lengths, and shine with a glossy finish. Rothschild says, “The way we think about mistakes can play a pivotal role in how we experience life. We miss out on so much potential when we obsess about mistakes in all things. Understanding which things require perfection and when the freedom from worrying about mistakes can greatly enhance our lives is critical.”
