World renowned performance artist Liu Bolin, aka the Invisible Man, is back doing what he does best: disappearing into his environment. This time, the artist lends his body to be covered in paint in front of a wall mounted with artillery. The Gun Rack performance took place at Eli Klein Fine Art in New York, where Bolin was assisted by a team of four painters, camouflaging him into the background.
The artist’s performance began with him putting on custom designed suit and spreading vaseline over his exposed skin and hair in preparation for the paint to be applied. While the outfit mimicked the shelves of guns hanging behind him, it’s the added paint to the rest of his body that really allows Bolin to blend into the background. Once the disappearing act was complete, the artist proceeded to peel the paint off.
Bolin says of this performance: “Today, my work here at Eli Klein Fine Art is about guns, and the many types of fire arms that are out there. For example, the frequently used AK-47 and others used by the U.S. military. Before this piece, I have created another one related to the sword and knife which I still have yet to realize.”
Several of Bolin’s incredible camouflaging feats are currently on display in an exhibition titled Mask at Eli Klein Fine Art through July 21, 2013.
