Designer Builds a Fully Functioning Coffee Table From More Than 10,000 LEGO Bricks

From pixelated cat sculptures to a fully-functional Hasselblad camera, we’ve seen many creatives turn LEGO’s versatile plastic bricks into extraordinary—and usable—designs. The latest piece to catch our eye is a minimalist coffee table built by Los Angeles-based art director Yusong Zhang. The simple piece of LEGO furniture was made using a staggering 10,480 LEGO bricks, without the use of screws or glue.

“I always had love for LEGO as a toy, but wanted to challenge myself to build something truly functional without sacrificing the aesthetic and creativity that’s rooted in LEGO designs,” Zhang told Dezeen. “The idea of building a Lego coffee table has been circling in my head for years.” After settling on the design, Zhang spent a further three weeks building the 2-feet-tall (0.61 meters) and 4-feet-long (1.22 meters) structure from LEGO’s standard 2×4 blocks.

From the outside, The LEGO Table appears to be made from plain white bricks, allowing it to blend into almost any interior. However, a side view reveals playful, rainbow-colored layers of red, yellow and, green, as well as a hollow center. Clever interlocking connections help to reinforce the structure, allowing it to easily hold up your coffee cups, books, and even your feet. “I never did a test on the weight it would hold, but I’ve [been] using it as my own coffee table for a while,” says Zhang. “It’s absolutely no problem if you want to put two feet up or a stack of magazines. It’s very sturdy.”

Although this particular model isn’t for sale, Zhang is open to taking custom orders, depending on interest. Discover more about the project on the designer’s website.
