The Republic of Korea’s pavilion at the Dubai Expo 2020 is a dynamic structure covered in rotating cubes that create dazzling light effects throughout the day. As the colorful forms revolve, the pavilion becomes an immersive installation for visitors in the Mobility District of the expo. Designed by Moon Hoon and Mooyuki Architects, the Korea Pavilion is about looking to the future of mobility.
Patterns are created as the 1,597 cubes spin to reveal one digital face and three analog faces featuring variations of blue, red, yellow, and white triangles. The designers describe this approach as neither digital nor analog, but as “digi_logue,” which acts as a combination of both. By creating analog faces of the cube, the designers hope to contribute new ideas to digital media installations.
The installation on the stepped façade is interrupted by four dramatic ramps protruding from the structure. As visitors use these ramps, they weave back and forth between the exterior and the interior of the pavilion. Photographs from the ramp demonstrate the immersive experience of walking past these dynamic moving “pixels.”
