One of our favorite modern-day illusionists, Keng Lye, has just come out with a new 3D painting that’s out of this world! Using just acrylic and resin, the Singapore-based artist has created this red octopus sculpture that looks like its head is emerging from the water. As mentioned before, Lye’s time-consuming process involves pouring resin into a bowl and then meticulously painting on top of it with acrylic, layer by layer.
Currently, this work is still in progress. To reach its current state, the artist worked on this four hours a day for a week. “I am planning to do two more layers,” he tells us. “The diameter of the work is about 150mm (15cm) and maybe about 2cm in depth. I found that the most challenging thing, so far, is creating depth, seeing as the container is fairly shallow, in order to achieve realism in the work.”
Below is picture of the painting from a different angle.
This time, notice the octopus’ vibrant red color and the twisting tentacles. Amazing.
