London-based British artist Kate MccGwire creates eye-catching abstract sculptures using beguiling bird feathers. The enchanting structures are simultaneously surreal, almost amorphous, and organic. There’s something biological about the works that make them seem as though there may still be a living creature tucked away, concealing itself in a flurry of feathers.
Each visually captivating piece presents a seamless sense of coordination and continued movement. Like a stream, all of the feathers flow in a unified direction, adding to each sculpture’s striking pattern. There’s an indescribable appeal to the sculptures’ unique construction that’s reminiscent of a beautiful ballet, like seeing a swan take its final bow.
For those hoping to see some of these spectacular pieces in person, MccGwire is currently showing her work across the world in five different exhibitions including: Le Royal Monceau in Paris, Gaasbeek Castle in Belgium, the Cheongju International Craft Biennale 2013 in South Korea, Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum in Cheltenham, and the Viewing Room exhibition at the Marylebone Church Crypt in London.
