Finding an apartment can be a stressful endeavor, especially when you have a pitbull. Many landlords have breed restrictions that include this type of dog. Knowing the struggle that these owners go through, Kara Montalbano is making the search a little easier. She’s looking to rent her three-bedroom home in Providence, Rhode Island, and her Craigslist ad welcomes breeds of all kinds–especially pit bulls.
A few years ago, Montalbano was in a similar situation. She and her two pit bulls (sadly, one has since died) needed a new place to live, and she knew it wasn’t going to be easy. In addition to her pups, she also had a rotating cast of fosters, thanks to her volunteer work with a local nonprofit called Handsome Dan’s Rescue for Pit Bull Type Dogs. “I looked for about two weeks and knew it was going to be a waste of time, so I decided to buy,” Montalbano told The Huffington Post.
Now, it’s time for Montalbano to move on from her charming home, and she has this under-served community in mind. “I prefer renters with pit bulls because I know how hard it is to find a place to live with one, for no reason other than the ignorance and labels,” she explains. Since her listing went live 9 days ago, she’s gotten many inquiries, as well as people who just want to thank her for giving a family with pit bulls a place to call home. “I have something that can sincerely help keep a family together, so why wouldn’t I rent to a family with a pit bull?” she said. “To me, this should be the norm, and I don’t think I’m doing anything that I wouldn’t expect other dog lovers to do.”
