DC Comics Characters Appear on The Saturday Evening Post

Artist Juan Carlos Ruiz combines two of his loves in this original series. The Saturday Evening Post‘s classic illustrations, made by Norman Rockwell and J.C. Leyendecker, are given a fun twist as the heroes and villains of DC Comics now grace the magazine’s famous covers. The artist used Adobe Photoshop and a Wacom tablet to create each piece.

“At first it wasn’t a series,” he told us when we asked how the idea came about. “I’ve always loved the covers of Norman Rockwell and J.C. Leyendecker and I wanted to make an illustration in order to pay tribute to these kinds of images, in my own style and technique. Then, on DeviantArt, I saw a picture of a cosplayer dressed up like Wonder Woman, with a little girl, and that inspired me to do it. Shortly after, I had an idea for an illustration for the Joker and I though that it could work very well in the same style. Then, I decided to make a series with the heroes and villains of DC Comics.”

The Granada, Spain-based artist just completed his seventh piece of the series, Swamp Thing. For those that are curious, next up for release is a villain. “I don’t know how many illustrations I’m going to make yet, but there are many characters that I want to include in it,” he said.

What kind of response has he received? “The truth is that I’m surprised by the warm reception! I make these pieces as part of my personal work, just for fun. But I’m very grateful for all the support I’m receiving, and for the enthusiasm from the viewers surrounding each new piece. I also want to thank to all the websites that are sharing my work.” Keep them coming!
