Amazing Figurative Sculptures Welded from Steel Scraps

Barcelona-based sculptor Jordi Dez Fernndez uses scraps of steel to create amazingly expressive sculptures of the human form. Along with his recent tribute to Ildefons Cerd (above), the urban planner responsible for designing the 19th-century extension of Barcelona called the Eixample, Fernndez has produced intricate sculptures of beautiful women, athletic and muscled men, and lovers entwined in an embrace.

Considering the image that many people may have of steel as cold and unyielding, it’s astonishing how Fernndez manages to use the material to sculpt such lifelike figures that are so expressive in their faces and forms. Fernndez says that his goal is to try “to bring sculpture back to the place where it belongs, the intimate place where the spectator gets moved from his insides, from the feelings deep down, the place where feelings get shaken.”
