Actor Johnny Depp is best known for his work in films like Pirates of the Carribean and Edward Scissorhands, but did you know he’s also a painter? Drawing was a constant companion for Depp as a child, accompanying him as his family moved frequently. In the early 2000s, when he was living in the French countryside and married to Vanessa Paradis, he began showing his paintings to the world. Now, he’s managed by Pantheon Art and frequently releases limited prints with the UK’s Castle Fine Art.
Until July 28, Depp’s newest series of limited-edition prints, Let Light In, is available at a special price. The collection consists of two pieces: Add the Light and A Rose Is A Rose Is A Rose. Both are a callback to his time in France, as over 20 years ago he created the original paintings these prints are based on while living at his estate, Le Hameau. The self-portrait and image of a single rose are a reminder of this happy time, as he was busy raising his children, Jack and Lily Rose.
Castle Fine Art describes the period in which the pieces were painted as a moment of “clarity, presence, and personal optimism” for Depp. Primarily rendered in watercolor, the mixed-media pieces are quietly expressive in a manner indicative of Depp’s artistic style. Each print is an edition of 195, all of which are hand-signed by the artist. Available singularly or as a pair, they join Depp’s other collections on Castle Fine Art.
Given the name of his daughter, A Rose Is A Rose Is A Rose is something quite special. “When Lily-Rose was a little kiddie, I’d paint her a rose every Valentine’s Day,” Depp shares. “On Mother’s Day I’d paint Vanessa some roses. You don’t really know where it’s going to go, it’s all up to chance.” Instead, his self-portrait is a fascinating look at how he viewed himself during this moment in time, when he called himself “very present.”
Until July 28, the prints are available individually for $3,500 each or as a framed pair ($6,400) or an unframed pair ($5,775). After the introductory period ends, the prices will increase.
Aside from his well-known work as an actor and musician, Johnny Depp is a talented painter.
