Social media is filled with makeup artists and their amazing work, but no one does it quite like Jharna Bhagwani. The Indian-Indonesian social media star has marveled the world with her videos, which have a cinematic quality to them thanks to her seamless transitions. By elevating it to a visual art, Bhagwani has turned the humble makeup transformation video into a vessel for storytelling.
One of the greatest examples of this is her Asoka trend video. Inspired by a 2001 cult Bollywood film by the same name, the challenge sees makeup artists recreate the intricate bridal looks from the movie. In the video, Bhagwani lip-syncs to lyrics of the song “San Sanana.” As the song progresses, we see her go from the early stages of her makeup—even showing us the dots of foundation and blush pre-blending—to full-wedding attire with tons of jewelry. And it all seems to happen as if by magic.
“My fascination with art began when I was 12, and with full support from my parents, I pursued makeup and that got me to where I am now,” Bhagwani said in a 2021 interview with Asia Live 365. “Makeup and also costumes are an important part of art. When I do makeup, I use my imagination and feelings to create, and since the object is usually human, the costumes came naturally as another important component to represent your vision.”
Today, Bhagwani boasts a following of over 13 million people on TikTok, where she shares her brilliant makeup transformations. Some are inspired by other Bollywood musicals, like Ram Leela, and pop culture, such as Barbie, Wednesday, and Emily in Paris. Whatever the source, one thing is for certain—her videos are always hypnotic to watch.
