Incredible Layered Resin Paintings of Women Underwater

Boston-based artist Jessica Dunegan creates surreal mixed media paintings of women who appear to be trapped underwater. Working with epoxy resin, poured in layers with acrylic paint, the artist’s creations are almost sculptural works of art as the pigments are encased within different levels of the translucent material. Each of the artist’s ethereal images is a carefully constructed piece that can take her up to three weeks to complete.

Dunegan meticulously assembles her time-consuming creations, layer by layer, by establishing a base with a photograph printed on transparency. She proceeds to coat it by pouring a layer of liquid resin and then inserts tubes of acrylic paint to trace the image. Once that dries, she continuously repeats the process of adding liquid resin and paint to produce a three-dimensional quality that accentuates the properties of water. The artist relates her process to icing a cake, though it’s hardly a piece of cake to reproduce.
