Sculptures Reveal the Inner Anatomies of Beloved Childhood Toys

When artist Jason Freeny lost his job as an industrial designer, he began carving the inner anatomies of famous toys. After months of unemployment, the talented creator turned to sculpting during a time of financial desperation. He decided to buy the character Dunny from Kidrobot, cut it open, fill it with clay body parts, and sell it on Ebay. To his utter surprise, the figure actually sold for $50, three times more than what he expected! Now, the gifted visionary’s creations sell for up to $17,000.

Art buyers pay for the sculptor’s attention to detail. Freeny starts his meticulous process by cutting the toys in half to study their anatomy. After figuring out the unique shape of each figure, the artist uses dentistry and pumpkin carving tools to create the bones and organs from epoxy clay. This step can take anywhere from a month to six weeks to complete, but once it’s done, the sculpted anatomy and bone structures are placed within the toys. Freeny leaves a part of the framework open for viewers to get a side-by-side comparison of each piece’s interior and exterior.
