British artist and designer Jacqui Symons works mainly in printmaking, paper, and design. Much of her work relates to the beauty and complexities of nature, and her fascination with the environment is evident in many of her final artworks. This installation, entitled Together We Are Greater, is an origami sculpture made from only used, recycled, and secondhand paper. The piece is one of many that Symons has created in response to the high amounts of paper that get wasted or thrown away every day.
Together We Are Greater consists of 2,500 hand-folded origami boxes that are suspended from the ceiling in an organic, fluid arrangement. The paper squares reflect the fragility of nature, and the organized patterns of color create a rainbow gradient that undulates in waves overhead. The large-scale work is Symons’s bold reminder to her viewers to protect the environment and to recycle.
