Real Breakup Excuses Baked into Desserts Let You "Eat Your Heart Out"

Food and emotion are intimately tied, and it seems that one does not exist without the other. After all, we celebrate special occasions with fancy meals, and a single dish–no matter how simple–can conjure up a myriad of feelings. When going through a romantic breakup, many people turn to junk food to see them through. Isabella Giancarlo explores this notion with her project Eat Your Heart Out, which turns heartbreak into tasty treats. The Brooklyn-based designer uses quotes–from actual breakups–and bakes the lines into delicious pies and cakes.

The inspiration for Eat Your Heart Out came from Giancarlo’s own experience. “After a break-up last spring, seven words sat me that I couldn’t shake,” she told MetroUK. “I thought about ways to reclaim that phrase… how could I sweeten words that initially took away my appetite?” Giancarlo’s confectionary creations make these biting words palpable and encourage you to eat your emotions. “Engage with the uncomfortable, sticky feelings of a broken heart,” she offered. “Gorge in feelings that are so often dismissed as self-indulgent.”

Since starting her project, Giancarlo sourced quotes from her own relationships and the stories of her friends. Now, she’s taking submissions. If you’ve got a good (bad) line, let her know on her website.
