With a playful preference for painting with her fingers, Brooklyn-based artist Iris Scott creates one-of-a-kind works on canvas. For her latest solo show, The Door is Ajar, Mind the Cat, Scott features these familiar finger paintings alongside a new series of Klimt-like pieces she describes as “cosmic patchwork paintings.”
Like her old work, Scott completes her new pieces with a brush-free approach. What sets her current series apart, however, is the artistic process. When planning one of these paintings, Scott first prints out a copy of a previous work. She then splices up the image with scissors and rearranges the pieces into a collage, which will serve as the study for her next piece. With this approach, the artist is “literally mining textures and colors from her past iconic finger paintings in order to reinvent the future of her large scale works.”
While The Door is Ajar, Mind the Cat celebrates this new experimental style, it also showcases the artist’s older works, including original pieces and a collection of embellished canvas prints. Ranging from depictions of energetic animals to outdoor scenes, Scott’s signature finger paintings prove the power of the artist’s hand—literally.
The Door is Ajar, Mind the Cat is on-view from March 1 (opening night party at 6 pm) through April 8 at Filo Sofi Arts in New York City.
