Over a decade after it was originally conceived, the ambitious InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland Hotel is opening to the public. Located in an abandoned quarry in Songjiang, about 30 miles from the city center, the 337 room hotel features panoramic views and several floors that are submerged underwater.
After years of delays, design and engineering modifications allowed construction to go ahead on this one of a kind hotel. JADE+QA, under the guidance of Martin Jochman, designed the concept and facade. Jochman was with Atkins when the project began, later moving on to open his own practice. The award-winning design calls for 19 floors, 17 of which plunge down into the depths of the quarry below ground level. Two of the 17 underground floors are actually submerged in a 33-foot-deep aquarium.
To take advantage of the natural surroundings, a waterfall visible from each room’s terrace was constructed. By keeping most of the construction to within the quarry pit, the architects have limited altering the natural landscape. Even the roof blends with nature. Its greenery seamlessly merging with the environment, providing a tranquil hangout for guests.
Thrill seekers will particularly love the inclusion of many adventure activities throughout the 61,000-square-meter resort. A sports center cantilevered over the quarry will be home to bungee jumping and rock climbing, while another area is dedicated to water sports. One of the most stunning architectural features of the complex is the glass “waterfall” that spills down the side of the quarry and houses an atrium.
The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is accepting reservations for November 20, 2018 onwards with prices starting at ¥3,380 ($487).
