Beautiful Chinese Landscapes Painted on the Human Body

Beijing-based artist Huang Yan expertly emulates traditional paintings from the Song Dynasty of Chinese landscapes on the human body. While the style and art of painting is a traditional practice, the choice to use the human form as a canvas adds new meaning to the works. The contemporary artist’s series, aptly titled Chinese Landscapes, presents a visual relationship between man and nature through his expert application.

Each of Huang’s body artworks reinforce Taoist concepts that imply a sense of harmony between man and his environment. In the same vein, the body and painted landscapes in the series move together as a single entity. One begins to question what the art truly is, though. Is it the paintings themselves, the body they’re exhibited on, or do they work in unison as a form of performance art?
