If 2016 and 2017 have taught us anything, it’s that our coifs double as unexpected canvases for amazing hair art. One of the latest in creative hair trends is being called holographic hair. Using a blonde base and unconventional coloring, women are dyeing their strands with multifaceted metallic and pastel hues. The result has an iridescent effect; as pieces of the hair move, they reveal subtle variations in cerulean, lavender, and mint green tones.
To achieve the holographic hair look, colorists are using a technique called hand-pressed coloring. In an interview, Redken colorist Chiala Marvici (the creator of this method) explains that this approach borrows from screen printing and brings it to your locks. She begins by painting designs of different patterns (such as circles, diagonals, and swirls) with various shades on a small sheet of hard plexiglass. Then, Marvici lays a section of hair on the glass and transfers her painting to the underside of it. Using a putty knife, she squeegees the selection of strands to ensure that it reaches the top of the hair. This process is repeated until she’s achieved her desired result.
If you’ve got blond or gray hair, you too can rock this en vogue trend. Would you try it?
