Photographer Helene Havard traveled from her home in French Polynesia to the island of Cuba and captured the urban landscapes of its capital city, Havana. Having little itinerary in mind, she “strolled the streets,” and fell in love with the lively hues and the unique atmosphere that lay off the beaten path. Devoid of many people, the structures have their aging beauty on full display. Her images emphasize the detailing of the buildings—from their arched windows, decorative railings, and colorfully painted exteriors.
Havana is known for its vibrant urban color palette. This fact is one that Havard highlights and uses some artistic license to draw attention to. Tamping down the saturation in her Cuba photos, she converts her hues into pastel palettes. The images take on a dreamy, almost surreal quality and they feel like they’re part of a Wes Anderson film. Quaint and quirky, the final results reflect how Havard felt about her visit. “I chose to edit those pictures the way I perceive this amazing place.”
