Delicate Animal Portraits Formed Out of Pressed Pieces of Fern Fragments

Bit by bit, Helen Ahpornsiri painstakingly pieces together these delicate little creations out of foraged ferns. Collected from the 20 odd species that grow in her garden in East Sussex, England, the crafty artist transforms the foliage into tiny sensations. Each character is formed from 50 to 100 individual fern fragments and the occasional ornamental gold leaf, put together with just the right shading and shape to make her creatures come alive.

Intricately cutting the ferns and arranging them in place, Ahpornsiri then flattens them using a wooden flower press she received as a child. It is a delicate process, and as Ahpornsiri told Instagram Blog: “I have to be careful not to sneeze or move too quickly [otherwise] the leaves go everywhere.”

The talented craftswoman takes commission-based work, and also sells prints of her dainty masterpieces through her Etsy shop.
