German artist Heike Weber spent two months in Turkey as part of an exchange program in which she became rather familiar with the Middle Eastern culture that is simultaneously modern and traditional. One aspect of the country that stuck with HeikeHeike was her experience at the bazars filled with tourist-attracting oriental rugs known as kilims. Rather than buying some herself, the creative artist, whose own surname translates as “weaver,” took it upon herself to physically construct some intricately detailed carpets of her own.
Instead of using finely woven threads to create the ornate patterns, Heike opts to reinterpret the customarily threaded rugs with silicone in her aptly-titled series Kilim. She interlaces complex oriental motifs, resulting in a deconstructed, contoured piece to lay on the ground. More like a grooved-outline than an actual floor covering, the kilims add an interesting design to each space they inhabit.
