Artist Gyun Hur creates installations with transformative properties. Using countless pieces of silk flowers, Hur hand-shreds the delicate materials into a fine, almost powdery, substance and reallocates their decorative charm to a new form. By destroying one sample of beauty, Hur is given the opportunity to reassemble the material in a different way, transferring its attractive qualities over to a new construction. In her installation titled I Dreamed of Your Utopia, the artist does exactly this while simultaneously exploring the hidden narratives of people with grandeur goals and dreams.
From afar, the installation is an illusionary piece that appears to be a colorful carpet. It is upon closer inspection that one notices the grainy texture of the separate tiny fabric pieces. Hur’s work, while beautiful in its completed form, is the result of time-consuming, laborious efforts. The project requires heaps of finely shredded fabric that resemble mounds of colorful dust when piled atop one another.
With the help of her family, Hur constructs her arduous installation, one row at a time. The piece itself is a reflection of their labor and the satisfying product of the work that has gone into making it. Almost like a performance piece, the installation echoes the artist’s own energy put into the work and presents the completed floor installation as her ultimate goal filled with memories gained through diligence and patience.
