The Microsoft Paint program is legendary. Created over three decades ago, it was one of the original forms of digital expression, and it still has a cult following today. The program is so intuitive that anyone can make MS Paint art—but it’s hard to master. Concha García Zaera, an 87-year-old grandmother in Valencia, Spain, has recently achieved Instagram fame because she’s remarkable at wielding her cursor. The creative octogenarian paints tranquil landscapes that are awe-inspiring in their texture and overall attention to detail.
Before Zaera was an MS Paint artist, she created pictures using a more traditional approach. She recently told Radio Valencia that she had previously taken classes in oil painting but that their strong smell prevented her from practicing at home. Her children later gave her a computer and she discovered Microsoft Paint. Now, according to UltimaHora, she uses Windows 7 and a mouse to create idyllic outdoor scenes inspired by postcards. One artwork can take two weeks (or longer), as Zaera pays special attention to the details like a stone texture and individual grasses.
Although the grandmother has recently rocketed to internet stardom, she remains humble about her recent success. “I do not understand very well why my drawings draw so much attention,” she said. “I think they are very simple things.”
