Last summer Google invested $2.75 million into Aptera Motors in an attempt to create a revolutionary, eco-friendly car (see Panda Ju’s post). Fast forward a year and the Aptera 2e, an all-electric car that the company calls an “aerodynamic marvel,” has reached pre-production and is scheduled to start being manufactured in October of this year. The fuel efficiency of 300mpg (0.78L/100km), when plugged in every 120 miles (190km), would make it one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the world. This means you can drive the three-wheeled vehicle 100 miles on a single charge and then fully recharge the vehicle through a standard outlet (110v) in less than 8 hours. In regard to speed, the Aptera 2e can go from zero to 60 in under 10 seconds, and has a top speed of 90 mph. Right now, California is the only place to buy and drive one. 4,000 people have put down a $500 deposit on the 2e, however deposits are not guaranteed sales. Aptera has yet to put a firm price on the vehicle, but has given a rather wide range of $25,000 to $45,000. The company website indicates the commitment is to build 100,000 units by 2015.
