Fascinated by the silence and organic phenomena found in nature, especially bioluminescence, animator Friedrich van Schoor and photographer Tarek Mawad spent six weeks deep in the woods in order to create Bioluminescent Forest. Using a computer and a projector, the duo imagined what different organisms would look like if they had the ability to emit colorful, ghostly light. The results, recorded in real-time, were edited into a breathtaking short film set to the musical compositions of Achim Treu.
As the video shows, van Schoor and Mawad used digital projection mapping to create a twinkling, dreamlike wonderland filled with gently glowing creatures and plants. Trees are emblazoned with fiery seams of fluorescence; silk-thin spiderwebs shine in the darkness; mushrooms are illuminated with magical light. Through the luminescent signs of life in the forest, the artists highlight the natural beauty of the tranquil surroundings.
