Nestled among the pages of Luis-Martín Lozano’s book Frida Kahlo: The Complete Paintings is a look at the artist’s home known as La Casa Azul. This legendary Mexico City abode was not just a place where Kahlo laid her head at night; it was the essence of her. She was born there, grew up, and returned to Casa Azul a person famous for her art and in a broken marriage to muralist Diego Rivera. The home is where she died at the age of 47.
Lozano, an art historian, has edited the book as a comprehensive look at Kahlo. Her paintings (with analysis) are on display, of course, but it also includes details taken from her personal diaries and archives. Because a home—and how it is decorated—is often so central to a person, the author was sure to include photos from Casa Azul, many of which have never been seen before.
The photos of Casa Azul showcase Khalo’s art and collections. In one image, she is standing with her assembly of Mexican folk art and a large papier-mâché Judas figure. Another picture shows her posing with a Pre-Hispanic sculpture in her garden. Taken together with her work and writings, we have a more complete picture of the fascinating artist and what inspired her to create the work she did during her short lifetime.
You can visit Casa Azul in person as it is now part of the Frida Kahlo Museum. Alternatively, you can virtually traverse the hallowed grounds in a digital tour.
