Pablo Picasso. Woman with Yellow Hair. 1931.

Spread across four venues in New York, Venice, Bilbao, and Abu Dhabi, the Guggenheim’s permanent collection contains more than 7,000 pieces of modern art, including masterpieces by Picasso, Modigliani, and Pollock. And now, you can view over 1,700 artworks by more than 625 different artists from the New York, Venice, and Bilbao Guggenheim museums online.

Stretching back to Impressionist master Monet and moving along to performance art by Marina Abramovic, a look at the collection is a free crash course in 20th-century art history. You can not only sort by artist, medium, date, and venue, but also by art movement. So if you are interested in who else, aside from Alexander Calder, is represented in the kinetic art movement or want to learn more about post-Impressionism, you can do so with the click of a button.

Best of all, most images are accompanied by a rich explanatory text that helps pick out the nuances of the artwork. Whether it’s understanding the subtleties behind Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Film Still series, and how this sets her apart from self-portrait photographers, to an in-depth explanation of Mark Napier’s internet art, there’s something for everyone.

The Guggenheim has made more than 1,700 pieces of its permanent collections in New York, Venice, and Bilbao available online for free. Here are some highlights, from Monet to Robert Mapplethorpe.
