Stunning Photographs Showcase the Beauty of Black Dogs

The process of finding a shelter animal a permanent home is often difficult, and for black dogs it’s even harder. After photographer Fred Levy learned this, he began an endeavor to help these pups out. The Black Dog Project is a stunning photo series that captures often-overlooked black dogs as they sit against a dark background. Each image highlights the striking sheen of their coats in addition to showcasing their loving personalities.

“Black Dog Syndrome” or “Black Dog Bias,” is a phenomenon that reveals a stereotype against dark-colored pets. Experts say that the aversion could possibly come from how these animals are depicted in movies and books, and stigmatizes them as being bad luck or wicked. Levy explained the his project to The Huffington Post. “I want to bring awareness to this issue and remind people who are searching for the perfect dog that black dogs have great personalities too.”

It’s hard not to fall in love with these canines when you see Levy’s photographs; their glamour shots make them appear anything but menacing. These heart-warming images encourage us to look beyond a dog’s appearance, because your furry friend can come in any color.
