Elegant Installation Visualizes Music as Pastel Pink Bubbles

In his fanciful photographic series Filling Spaces, graphic designer and practiced pianist Federico Picci imagines music materialized as delicate, blush-colored bubbles. Much like a melodic tune, the dreamy orbs whimsically waft through the air, occupying any empty space with their ethereal presence.

The photographs that comprise the splendid series are set in a sunlit space. Furnished only with an ebony piano, a gramophone, a table and chair set, and a neoclassical bust, the large parlor features ample empty space, which Picci fills with the pale pink globes. As whimsical, visual manifestations of sound, the bubbles emerge from the body of the piano, spill from the horn of the gramophone, and delicately drift through the luminous room, where they eventually settle in swarms on the floor, the furniture, and the statue.

Picci’s own experiences as both a musician and an artist inspired him to create the exquisite series. “This concept started as a personal study on the connection between light and space,” he explains. “I tried to show how something immaterial like music can fill the room with his beauty.” When playing the piano, Picci has often wondered what certain tones and tunes would look like if they were visually perceptible. “I always try to imagine how the music that I play might have a shape, a color, a mass or even a smell,” he told Artistic Odyssey. “As a human being, we are unable to see it, but we can actually feel it through our infinity imagination.”
