Called one of the most influential photographers of all time, Philip-Lorca diCorcia has had a long and varied career. He’s shot everyone from his friends and family to prostitutes and drug addicts and even some of the biggest supermodels in the world. With a Masters in Fine Arts in Photography, diCorcia knows how to construct scenes that have a heightened sense of drama. His photos are a beautiful mix of reality and fantasy, where emotionally interesting characters take center stage.
“I think of these people as characters and every character has a psychology,” diCorcia has said. “I don’t photograph models in the usual way, with all that prancing and jumping, so inevitably they ask me what to do. I don’t want them standing there looking glum; I want them to understand the narrative arc of what we’re trying to get at even if we don’t understand it ourselves.”
Over the course of 11 years, Philip-Lorca diCorcia completed 11 photographic portfolios in collaboration with W magazine’s creative director Dennis Freedman. DiCorcia’s fashion stories have been collected for the first time in a 252 page hardcover book called Philip-Lorca diCorcia: Eleven which will be released in April.
