Emily McDowell, the Los Angeles-based illustrator behind those adorably awkward cards, has a new set of mugs that you’ll want to sport around the office. (Especially if you’re the sarcastic type). Her wonderfully witty humor graces the outside of eight ceramic mugs, perfect for filling your morning cup of joe.
We asked Emily to tell us more about this product line:
“When I was in middle and high school in the late 80s-early 90s, a family friend who was like a second mom to me had a collection of screen printed mugs with funny sayings on them, like ‘World’s Greatest Lover’ and ‘Screw Everything.’ I learned how to drink coffee out of those mugs, so I have a lot of love for them, and I feel like the world is ready for an updated version of that trend. My work is all about reflecting our shared human experience in all its messy, weird glory, and it turns out mugs are a pretty fun way to do that. I like a wacky mug because you can keep it on your desk every day, it’s useful, but you don’t have to commit to wearing it, like a t-shirt. These mugs are sublimation printed, which means you can print all the way around the mug instead of just the traditional spot design on each side, so that element was also fun to design for.”
Love her sharp sense of humor. As a mom of a talkative 2-year-old, my personal favorite is the one above. As Emily states , “Ssh. Let the mug speak for you until you are able to speak for yourself. If only your 4-year-old could read. At least your coworkers can.”
