Spanish painter Eloy Morales creates large hyperrealistic oil paintings of himself with smears of paint and shaving cream across his face. This messy addition causes light to catch and reflect in unusual ways. Eloy patiently works through tiny sections at a time, filling in paint and blending as he goes. The painting spreads slowly across the canvas rather than being built up from layers.
Surprisingly, detail is relatively unimportant to Eloy. He explains, “Many people think that my work is based on details, but it is not that way. For me the secret is in the correct valuation of tones.” He asserts that the details are already integrated when the overall image is evaluated if the transition between tones is accurate.
