Merging abstraction, surrealism, and realism, Australian oil painter Ella Baudinet has followed her inner voice to forge her unique style. Her dreamy paintings draw viewers into a mysterious world where human figures seem to emerge from smoky swirls of color. Working on a large scale, she pulls in different influences to bring together her creative vision.
Baudinet has been painting from a young age, and by the time she was a teenager, she had mastered photorealism. However, this soon left her unfulfilled, and that is when she followed her instincts to develop her style. Now, her canvases merge classical elements, with figures that appear to be influenced by Baroque art, and modern sensibilities.
“I have maintained a growth mindset in all aspects of my life since choosing to be an artist,” she tells My Modern Met. “As a result, I continue to create more beautiful work. Although there is an ode to darkness and suffering as great teachers within my paintings, I choose to focus on the beauty. To lean towards optimism in the overall message.”
Since moving to London six months ago, Baudinet has continued to grow as an artist. By following her instincts, she continues to produce exceptional work that is true to her sensibilities. By creating uplifting and engaging paintings, she hopes to inspire viewers to look within and create meaning for themselves. She sees this as a push away from the contemporary art scene, which she often sees as exclusionary, with an emphasis on creating discomfort.
“I reject the rejection of beauty in art,” she writes. “I want my breath to be taken away from an artwork, be in shock from the mastery of craftsmanship, feel my body vibrate in response to something of greatness. I want my soul to understand it, not necessarily my intellect. I want a world where we celebrate artists that create things of beauty, not look at beauty like it’s out of fashion, uncool, or unneeded.”
