Kinetic Sculpture Shows Humans Evolving and Devolving in an Endless Loop

DOMA, an Argentinian art group, has taken inspiration from human evolution to create an elegant kinetic sculpture titled Involucion Primate. The collective is made up of four artists named Mariano Barbieri, Julian Pablo Manzelli, Matias Vigliano, and Orilo Blandini; together, they’ve crafted a mobile work of art that rotates silhouetted figures in an endless loop. It’s practically hypnotic to watch.

The individual pieces are mounted to a belt that travels along a metal, horizontally-mounted bar. As the figures make their way around it, each passes by a flashing bulb that appears to highlight part of the evolutionary path. We see that DOMA started with a primate on all fours that begins to stand, little by little, more upright; it eventually becomes the modern man. Once the human being has reached this pinnacle, he starts to devolve and the cycle starts all over again.
