Iconic Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana transformed Rome into their runway with a series of three events last week, celebrating Alta Moda, Alta Sartoria, and Alta Gioielleria. The Roman Forum, Castel Sant’Angelo, and Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli were home to over-the-top spectacles that honored traditional Italian craftsmanship and creativity.
Dolce & Gabbana’s annual Alta Moda events are always something to look forward to, but this year’s event in Rome, which also coincided with a Jubilee Year, was truly spectacular. These events, which began in Taormina in 2012, are intended to celebrate handcrafted clothing, from rich embroidery to delicate metalwork.
On July 14, couture creations paraded through the Roman Forum during Alta Moda, with models wearing fashion inspired by the Eternal City. From rich brocade to cascading chiffon, these garments were transformed into canvases for works of art. One particularly impressive piece was a long coat that is a tribute to the Trevi Fountain. Created using an intarsia technique, the fashion house posted a behind-the-scenes video that shows the meticulous care that goes into creating such a piece.
The previous night, the action took place just 45 minutes outside the city in Tivoli, which hosted the Alta Gioielleria collection. The sculptural jewelry, inspired by ancient Roman sculpture, is particularly striking in images of classical sculptures wearing the dazzling earrings and necklaces. Taking in the impressive handling of gold and precious materials is a reminder of the artistry behind jewelry making.
The events concluded in the heart of Rome, in front of Castel Sant’Angelo. As angels sculpted by Bernini looked on, male models strolled the Ponte Sant’Angelo in an ecclesiastical-inspired presentation of Alta Sartoria. From bronze filigree bodices to elaborately inspired robes, it was a masterclass in handcrafted tailoring.
