Couple Takes a Plunge to Get Married in the Middle of the Caribbean Sea

We’ve all heard of couples getting married on the beach, but what about in the water? It’s practically unheard of. But that’s exactly what bride Susana Zamos and her groom Jovany did; their water wedding was performed in the middle of the Caribbean Sea in Cozumel, Mexico. Surrounded by 100 friends and family, they stood fully clad—and waist deep–in the crystal clear water.

It comes as no surprise that this unique ceremony was hard to pull off. “We had a wedding planner who told us: ‘you can’t get married in the ocean, it’s much too complicated,’” Zamos recalled. “So we thought, ok, we’ll get married on the beach like everyone else.”

But, when photographer Sol Tamargo (of Del Sol Photography) heard their idea, she convinced them otherwise. “She told us ‘you HAVE to do it! You have to get married in the water, it will be AMAZING!’ This entire vision all came about because of Sol… she’s the one who turned the dream into a reality!” And amazing it was, once they figured out the logistics. Getting guests to the secluded El Cielo sandbar required two boats and a catamaran.

For Tamargo, having the proper equipment took rigorous planning. “We [the Del Sol team] were flying a drone from a moving boat, I was shooting with 2 large underwater housings, it was technically was very challenging as I couldn’t really see.”

Tamargo also recognizes the excitement that this endeavor brought. “I was shooting from the boat, then I jumped into the water wearing a snorkel, mask and wetsuit and mermaid cap in the middle of a wedding!” Tamargo exclaimed. “When do you ever get to do something like that?!”

The resulting photographs are incredible. Taken both above and below the water, they show the bride floating down the “aisle” in a beautiful peach colored dress that seems perfectly at home in the ocean. Foregoing a veil, she opted for a regal seashell crown.

In the end, the entire wedding reflected Zamos’ close ties to the ocean. “I have always loved the water,” the bride explained. “I’m a scuba diver and was fortunate enough to grow up with a pool in the backyard and the sea not far away. My happiest days were always in the water.” Now, she has one more to add to that list.
